We Explain It All About Clarissa

Yeah, that is an awkward title. But those early teenage years are awkward as well, so much like Clarissa Darling’s, best known from the Nickelodeon show “Clarissa Explains It All”. That’s right, this week we went old school, to our first merry years as young television viewers.

Meet Clarissa. A young teenager living in the suburbs of Anywhere, U.S.A. Going through all the trials and tribulations that all girls have growing up. Annoying siblings, first crushes, piggy-backing parents, crazy outfits and hair, a pet alligator…well, maybe not ALL. Clarissa Darling is a slightly eccentric case of the teenage years. She has a computer, on which she develops video games involving killing her little brother (Ferguson…the name matches the man) and the likes. This is the 90’s, remember? The age of huge floppies and the beginnings of AOL. The fact that she is a genius of technology makes her that much cooler to me. As we discuss, she also had the coolest phone ever–a clear see-all-the-parts inside deal that she had…wait for it…in her room. Which was doubly cool. I remember totally idolizing this girl and wanting to be her. She was (and probably is) the coolest girl that I will never be. Another trademark of the show was her best friend, who didn’t use the front door, but a ladder into her bedroom window. Also cool, but could become creepy in the later awkward years of their boy-girl best friendship. Clarissa is also known for addressing the camera, in a through the looking-glass kind of fashion that was unique to that time (a la Wayne’s World, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) that you don’t see too much anymore.

But let’s talk about the music. Clarissa, a classic 90’s chick, rocked out to the Cranberries, They Might Be Giants (she has posters of John Linnel in her room), and Pearl Jam; I like to imagine her enjoying a variety of popular tunes from the ’90’s, including Aerosmith, R.E.M, and maybe Boyz II Men. Take a listen to our discussion, and check out our 8tracks mix. And if you, like me, are a fan of opening credits, here’s Clarissa’s.
