Lorelai Gilmore was our show’s guest tonight. She was raised in Hartford, Connecticut by wealthy parents, Richard and Emily Gilmore. They planned to present her to society, have her attend an Ivy League university, and marry a man with wealth and good breeding. This plan was dashed when Lorelai became pregnant at 16.
Lorelai and her daughter, Rory, ran away to Stars Hollow, a small town near Hartford. Mia, the owner of the Independence Inn, took them in and gave Lorelai a job as a mad. Lorelai eventually worked her way up to manager.
For many years, Lorelai had almost no contact with her parents; however, when Rory got accepted into a private school, Chilton High School, Lorelai needed some help paying tuition. Her parents agreed to fund Rory’s education as long as the girls attended a mandatory Friday Night Dinner.
Lorelai is witty and free-spirited. Her sentences are peppered with pop culture references. She also goes on random tangents. During our interview, she came up with a new catch phrase (“Oy with the poodles already!”) and discussed the antique anvils.
Growing up in the 80s, Lorelai’s iPod is filled with music from that era. The Bangles, XTC, the Go-Gos, David Bowie, and Metallica were among the most played. She often swaps cds with her daughter too because some more recent artists also graced the playlist such as Arcade Fire and the Shins.
Lorelai was one of our funniest guests, and this is one of our longest interviews. We just couldn’t shut her up.
